The Literacy Partners of Kewaunee County and the Kewaunee County Buy Local Initiative are joining forces in an effort to boost the local economy and battle illiteracy in the local community. The newly formed partnership is presenting a local consumer-focused “Advantage Card”, which will provide discounts and value-added offerings from over 25 businesses throughout the local community. The Kewaunee County Advantage Card will be valid from September 1, 2010 through September 1, 2011 and sold for $10 at designated locations in the county. Proceeds will be donated to the Literacy Partners of Kewaunee County.

“We are excited to work with so many amazing businesses in our local community and have an opportunity to strengthen the vital work of the Literacy Partners, which is to improve the reading, comprehension, writing, and speaking skills of Kewaunee County residents.” said Anne Laurent, Coordinator of Literacy Partners of Kewaunee County.

Steelhead Saloon stands on the corner of 4th and Clark Street. The building was built in 1880 as the Barstar Hotel. In its day it was quite the center of activity. On the second floor there was a dance floor and orchestra loft with the Barstar boys leading the band. Hotel rooms were located on the second floor as well. The 1st floor included the proprietor’s apartment, the hotel’s kitchen, bar and dining facilities. It also had a livery situated on the east side of the hotel for those who arrived by horse drawn buggy.  Prior to the latest remodeling it was DeTour’s Supper Club in the late 1980’s.

Entertainment at Steelhead includes a DJ every Friday night. Saturdays, once a month, feature karaoke and an occasional band. During the winter months leagues include women’s and men’s pool, bean bags, darts and bean bag toss. All are welcome to join in the fun. Annual events include a Toga party in April, a motorcycle ride in to Door County and a golf outing at Alaska Golf Course.

One of the unique features at Steelhead Saloon is their Fixin’s Bar, you can custom build your burgers, hot dogs, brats and sandwiches with any of the many condiments offered. The menu also includes steaks, ribs, fish and pizza made in a brick lined oven.  Friday night features an All-You-Can-Eat Fish Fry for $10 and other fish and shrimp offerings as well.  Saturday includes steaks and extended entrée choices. The bar includes 12 beers on-tap including micro brews and Guinness. The bar also features a wide variety of spirits and bottled beer.

Outdoor seating is available on the deck attached to the back of the building. The restaurant is fully handicap accessible and offers free Wireless Internet. Kids are always welcome, there are games to keep the kids and their parents entertained. The gameroom includes 2 pool tables and the main dining area features air hockey, foosball and dart machines.

Steelhead Saloon t-shirts and hooded sweatshirts have become a popular souvenir of visiting fishermen and tourist. So much so that the line of apparel keeps growing with hats and ladies t-shirts and tank tops added this year.

Owner, Kathy Kunath, would like to thank all her 14 employees, two of which are celebrating their 3rd year anniversary with Steelhead , Cami Burmeister and Trista Kinjerski. She would like to also thank Algoma and the surrounding communities for their support over the last 3 years.

I grew up on a dairy farm and assumed that would be my calling in life.  I spent time working at the two nuclear plants in the area during outages and discovered that was not my interest either. I then decided to save my money and start my own business.  In 2003 I began business as “Matt’s Skidsteer Services.  I bought a truck, trailer and skidsteer and have not looked back since that time.  In 2009 we changed our name to “Matt’s Services LLC” because we provided more that just skidsteer services and the past name did not indicate that.  Some of the services we provide include complete landscape installs, sewer/water services, septic repairs and  small excavating projects. So the name change to Matt’s Services LLC fit our scope of work better.

We currently have two fulltime employees in the field plus Matt and a part time office employee.  At Matt’s we strive to provide superior customer service and hope our customers call for other services.

The Ahnapee Trail Century is a 13, 32, or 64 mile bike ride that takes riders through cedar wetlands, farm fields, orchards, and woodlands surrounding Luxemburg, Casco, Algoma, and Sturgeon Bay. Wildlife abounds throughout-bald eagles, sandhill cranes, deer, and other wildlife are common sightings along the trail, beautified by colors of the season.

The course will begin at the Luxemburg-Casco Intermediate School parking lot and will proceed to the Ahnapee State Trail. This trail is a crushed limestone surface and is suitable for just about any bicycle. The trail is very flat, but riders can expect some variation as the trail climbs out of river valleys and passes through some lowlands.
